Youth Respond in Western Kenya

The Church of the Nazarene and World Mission Broadcast have been ministering for more than a decade to the youth in western Kenya through radio and television. The ministry continues to grow. What was started as a 30-minute radio program every Wednesday, now includes a 1-hour television program, Holiness Hour, every Thursday and two 30-minute youth programs that broadcast every week. One is in common language, Oluyali Lwa Avavuhka (The Glory of Youth),and the second is in the national Kiswahili language, Vijama Mambo Leo (Today’s Youth).

Pastor Joseph Odongo works with a team of nine young people across this region on each of these programs. Each team travels with a digital audio recorder, gathering audio that is then edited and sent for broadcast on Radio Sayare.

Many youth in this region have been blessed through the programs as evidenced by the numerous calls and text messages from listeners. They request prayer and Christian literature, and a number have given their lives to Christ. Gifts are sent ranging from Basic Bible Study material and New Testaments. New believers have been so grateful to the Church of the Nazarene and God for providing His word.

God is changing lives. One such life is Lena Chebsir, a 23-year-old high school graduate who grew up attending rural schools. Her parents did not have an income that would cover modern medical care for their eight children. Therefore they depended on a traditional medicine man. From childhood, they all had charms strapped around their arms and legs for protection against the evil eyes of people and spirits that bring about all kind of illnesses. For the people of Lena’s village, this is just a way of life. There are all kinds of “dangers and fears” in this world, and one cannot live without “real protection.”

According to Lena, the Word of God came true to her on June 19, 2010, when the radio teacher unfolded to her the words of Jesus who says, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever” (John 6:51). She was deeply touched by this good news about Jesus. “We live in fear because of sin in our lives. We can’t be happy and have no hope. When the teacher told me that Jesus is calling us to Him, I gave my life.”

World Mission Broadcast and Nazarene Missions International Launch Mics for Missions? Initiative

Recently the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States of America prohibited the use of wireless microphones operating in the 700 MHz band (698-806 MHz). Churches and organizations were told to cease using these microphones by June 12, 2010, or face heavy fines. The FCC estimates that 25 percent of wireless microphones operate within the 700 MHz spectrum.

This FCC ban only applies to U.S.A. air space, which means these wireless microphone systems can be used in other countries. As a way of assisting global churches, World Mission Broadcast (WMB) and Nazarene Missions International (NMI) partner to offer “Mics for Missions.” This one-year initiative will facilitate the donation of usable wireless microphone systems from the U.S.A. to be used in churches around the world.

A Web site has been set up at www.micsformissions.org where churches may complete a donation form for equipment, as well as print a mailing label. WMB will facilitate the cleaning and servicing of the equipment, as well as connecting the equipment to a need outside the U.S.A. Donors may designate their gift to a specific area if they know of a need, but the cleaning and servicing will still be done by WMB.

Even though the majority of deliveries to the field will take place through mission teams, donations are also being accepted through the Web site to help cover shipping costs where personal delivery is not an option.

Perfect Rhythm Recognized for Making a Difference

Recently, World Mission Broadcast (WMB) Asia-Pacific welcomed some special guests, station manager Pastor Eric Maliwat and broadcaster Carmen Vargas from Radio 702 DZAS. This was the first time they had visited the regional facilities.  The guests presented a special plaque of recognition as a broadcast partner for providing the WMB youth radio program Perfect Rhythm <http://www.perfectrhythm.fm/>, which airs every Sunday morning. For over five years, WMB has been a program supplier of this hit youth-oriented program, which is broadcast nationwide in the Philippians and around the world through live streaming on the Internet.

After touring the studios with Perfect Rhythm program host Jordan Escusa, Maliwat and Vargas enjoyed some fellowship and refreshments with the production team. Escusa was presented a plaque in recognition of the impact this ministry is having on youth in the Philippians.

Escusa also recently emceed a gathering of more than 500 people in front of the new Taytay Municipal Hall to witness the oath-taking of the re-elected mayor of Taytay, along with newly elected vice mayor councilors.  Escusa was chosen to host by the mayor himself, because the mayor knew Escusa from past acquaintances.

"I was flattered when I heard that the mayor actually picked me to host when shown a list of possible emcees,” says Escusa.  “It's funny, I think he knows me more from being a youth minister, rather than a radio host. He calls me 'pastor' every time we see each other." Escusa is also youth pastor at the Taytay
First Church of the Nazarene. His GenCon youth group has worked with the mayor's office in the past, doing community service projects and cleaning up some of the dirtiest streets in town.

"It was fun as much as it was an honor doing it for God and country," Escusa said.

Spanish Television Reaches D.C.

Four years ago, Pastors David Alberto and Maria Fernanda Cortes de Perez began a new media strategy for the Cambio de Ruta Church of the Nazarene in Annandale, Virginia, near Washington, D.C.  “We started on public access television in Fairfax, Virginia,” says David. “Now we are on six different stations in Northern Virginia and getting ready to launch on four more in the Washington, D.C., area.”

Media has become an important part of the church growth strategy for Cambio de Ruta Church.  “To reach out to our community, we started doing a talk show. We include guests, news, sports, and music videos,” says David. Their program is currently the highest rated program on the stations that air it. “Using this tool is very important.  One channel reaches thousands of homes.  Our goal is to be in 1 million homes this year.”

The media ministry has made a huge impact on the growth of the church.  “We receive dozens of calls each week,” say David.  “Between four to seven people visit our church each week because they saw our programs.”

There are many powerful testimonies of people who have been reached with this ministry.  One program topic was the loneliness felt by many Hispanic immigrants who left family behind to come to the U.S.A.  “We spoke about how we can be confident that God will never leave us alone,” says David.  One viewer has recently had an accident on the job and was watching from his hospital bed.  “He had no family with him here in the U.S.A.  He saw the program and began crying, because he said that no one loved him and needed him, not even God. But when he saw this, he started to thank God because he was alive and because God was telling him that he wasn’t alone.”

Plans are in place to add to the church’s ministry with the creation of more programs for teens, women, and children. The focus is to move to major Spanish TV networks and expanding to channels in Miami and internationally.

Please pray for the Cambio de Ruta Church as they seek to make a difference in the District of Columbia and around the world.

Reflecting God Initiative Continues Expansion

Launched this past May, ReflectingGod.com is an online devotional community with one common purpose – the pursuit to embrace holy living. The goal of this ministry is to foster discussion about what it means to live a holy life in the twenty first century.  ReflectingGod.com is a joint effort of the Church of the Nazarene, World Mission Broadcast, and WordAction Publishing.

Since the launch of the English version in the U.S.A. and Canada, churches have begun linking to ReflectingGod.com by offering the podcast on their local church Web sites. Pastors from Mississippi to Kentucky to Michigan are broadcasting the programs on their local radio stations to impact their communities. Laity are subscribing to the podcast feed on iTunes, joining the Reflecting God Facebook page and following Reflecting God on Twitter.

This September, Reflecting God will go multi-lingual with the addition of the Spanish, Portuguese, and French versions currently under production.

This summer the East Ohio District NMI Convention received a special offering to purchase the necessary equipment to produce the ministry in French. District NMI President Jan Williams along with her husband, Rev. Merrill Williams, recently stopped by the Global Ministry Center in Lenexa, Kansas to unveil the equipment. Nazarene layperson Rachel Ferryman, originally from Cote d’Ivoire, Africa, now living in Indiana, will produce the new French ministry.

The Spanish and Portuguese versions will be produced by the South America World Mission Broadcast team from studios in Pilar, Argentina, and Campinas, Brazil.  More languages will be added as this new strategy unfolds around the world.

Mics for Missions, Reflecting God, Alternative Radio, Arabic TV, New Media Who is WMB today?

When you think of World Mission Broadcast (WMB), do you think of a multifaceted, global media ministry? Do you think of radio programs broadcast from an “alternative” setting¾the storage room of a church in Argentina? Or perhaps you think of television programs broadcast in Arabic and streamed on the Internet.

Today, WMB is all of the above and more. Two of our most recent initiatives, Reflecting God and “Mics for Missions, move WMB further into the realm of discipling believers and resourcing broadcast ministers worldwide.

Reflecting God is an online daily devotional resource for people who desire to embrace holy living. Hundreds of people have signed up to receive Reflecting God, churches have posted it on their Web sites and connected with their local radio stations to air the short devotional spots. Visit http://reflectinggod.com/ to learn more.

“Mics for Missions” in a partnership of WMB and Nazarene Missions International (NMI) that facilitates the donation of usable wireless microphone systems from the U.S.A. to churches around the world. The microphones are wireless mics that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the U.S.A. recently banned from usage in that country. However, the mics can be used in other countries, and WMB is honored to be the conduit of getting equipment like this to churches in need.

In the midst of WMB’s expanding efforts to resource the church, our highest priority remains sharing God’s love via radio, television, and Internet programs. With your prayer and financial support, WMB will continue to be a thriving, vital resource for the global church. Please consider giving a gift today to keep programs on the air…our alternative radio stations, Arabic TV, and all the other WMB programs depend on your support.  Gifts can be made online at http://www.worldmissionbroadcast.org/contribute.aspx or mailed to:
